Pickleball rules: the short version you can use today
A court-ready overview of serving, the two-bounce rule, the kitchen, and the faults beginners see most.
Serve diagonally, let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying, keep volleys out of the kitchen, and play until a fault ends the rally.
Start with the two-bounce rule
After the serve, the return must bounce before the serving team hits it. Then the serving team must let that return bounce before playing it. After those two bounces, either side may volley or play the ball after a bounce.
Know the kitchen boundary
You may stand in the non-volley zone at any time, but you cannot volley while touching it or its line. Momentum after a volley matters too: if it carries you into the kitchen, it is a fault.
Most common faults
The first few rules cover the vast majority of rec-play calls.
- A serve lands in the wrong service box or on the kitchen line.
- The ball bounces twice before it is returned.
- A player volleys before the two-bounce sequence is complete.
- A player volleys while in, on, or carried into the kitchen.

Was the server behind the baseline, was the score called, and did the ball land in the diagonal service court beyond the kitchen line?

Did the serve bounce before the return, and did the return bounce before the serving team volleyed?

If someone volleyed, were that player, their clothing, paddle, and momentum clear of the non-volley zone and its line?

End of rally
Look for the first fault: out ball, net, double bounce, illegal volley, wrong server or position, or another rule-specific fault.
