The kitchen rule: what you can and cannot do
The non-volley zone is simple once you separate standing there from volleying there.
The kitchen is the seven-foot zone on each side of the net. You can enter it, but you cannot volley while touching it, its line, or being carried into it by momentum.
Standing in the kitchen is allowed
You can step into the kitchen to hit a ball that has bounced. You can wait there while your partner plays the ball. The restriction is tied to volleying, not to entering the zone.
Volley momentum counts
If you volley from just outside the line and your momentum carries you into the kitchen, it is still a fault. Recover your balance before you move forward.
Why the rule exists
The kitchen keeps players from crowding the net for easy overhead attacks. It creates the soft-game exchange that makes pickleball strategy interesting.
Situation check
Four kitchen situations that settle most disagreements
The non-volley-zone rule is about volleying, contact, and momentum—not about banning players from the seven-foot area.
- 01
A bounced ball lands in the kitchen
Step in and play it. You may remain there until you choose to move; the restriction applies when you volley.
- 02
A foot touches the kitchen line during a volley
That is a fault because the non-volley-zone line is part of the zone.
- 03
Momentum carries a player in after contact
That is still a fault, even if the volley itself was struck from outside the zone and the ball is already dead.
- 04
A partner or object provides contact
A volley can become a fault if the volleying player contacts a partner or object that is touching the zone during the act of volleying.
Rules, schedules, and safety guidance can change. Confirm the non-volley zone rule.
