How to serve in pickleball: a repeatable 5-step motion

Choose a volley serve or a drop serve

A volley serve is struck before the ball bounces and must meet the current contact rules. A drop serve is struck after the ball bounces and can be an easier way to organize timing. Learn one first instead of switching whenever a serve misses.

The five-step serving routine

   Set

   Stand behind the baseline in the correct serving area with relaxed knees and a target in mind.

2. 02

   Call

   Say the complete score before starting the motion.

3. 03

   Release

   Use a calm release without manipulating the ball to add spin before contact.

4. 04

   Swing

   For a volley serve, move the paddle in a clear upward arc and meet the current paddle-head and contact-height requirements.

5. 05

   Recover

   Finish balanced, expect a deep return, and remember that the serving team must let that return bounce.

Use a safe target before you chase power

Aim several feet inside the sideline and baseline. Height over the middle of the net creates margin. A deep, legal serve that starts the point is more valuable than a low-percentage attempt at an ace.

Fix the most common serve problems

• Into the net: raise the target and slow the swing.
• Long: reduce effort before changing the whole motion.
• Wide: move the target farther from the line.
• Foot fault: build the same pre-serve foot position every time.
• Rushed contact: pause after the score call and use one breath.

A 10-minute serve practice

Hit 20 serves to one large deep target, then 10 to the other side. Count legal serves and the longest streak. Finish by adding a partner return or a shadow split step so the serve connects to the next ball.
