Third-shot drop drills for a calmer trip to the kitchen
Build touch, height, and decision-making with simple targets before you try to use a drop in every game.
A useful third-shot drop is soft enough to land in the kitchen and high enough to clear the net safely. Practice the shape before the speed.
Use a big landing zone
Place a target in the middle third of the kitchen. Starting wide or too close to the net asks for too much precision before you own the basic arc.
Start from a feed
Have a partner feed a consistent deep ball. Your only job is to send it into the kitchen and move forward under control. Repeat ten times, then switch.
Know when to drive
The drop is not mandatory. If the return is short and high, a controlled drive may be the smarter decision. The skill is choosing, not forcing one pattern.
Skill ladder
Earn distance before you practice the full third-shot drop
Move back only when the ball shape remains repeatable. Distance should be the last variable, not the first challenge.
- 01
Kitchen line
Cooperatively lift soft balls into the opposite kitchen until you can repeat a safe arc and balanced finish.
- 02
Transition zone
Move back several feet and use the same compact motion. Count balls that clear the net and land in the middle third of the kitchen.
- 03
Baseline
Add a serve and return feed, choose drop or drive based on balance, then move forward with your partner only behind a useful ball.
